Technique, nature and territorialization strategies of large agricultural producers in MATOPIBA - Brasil

In the development of capitalist agriculture, important aspects related to its natural character imposed significant limitations on it. It was only since the 1970s, for example, that the cerrado, which currently has regions almost entirely dominated by agriculture, began to be considered suitable for such activity. Many of the limitations that still persist are in the focus of scientific research and technological development, as demonstrated by advances in the field of biotechnology. Based on these considerations, this project intends to characterize the agriculture developed in the region called MATOPIBA (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) and analyze the process of territorialization of large agricultural producers in this region, particularly aiming at the relationship it establishes with the nature from technique and capitalist accumulation. In these regions, we can see the consolidation of neoliberal agriculture in which the commodification of nature is a prominent dimension in the process of incorporating new agricultural frontiers. This is based on the technical discourse and practice of agents in the sector who aim to gain greater control over production processes. In this dynamic, the disregard for native ecosystems and the control of nature through technology are also fundamental elements in the discourse to attract settlers and investors in the sector. It is noteworthy that this project is in the wake of and benefits from empirical research carried out in Western Bahia and Southern Piauí since 2012.
